Is Your Animal ILL?

Dehydrated? Not Eating?

by Pat McKay

For cats and dogs who are ill, dehydrated, or not eating at all, my first suggestion is to give raw egg broth, raw meat broth, or colostrum broth.

Egg yolk broth: One RAW egg yolk (the yellow), mix with just enough purified water to be soupy and serve or thin enough to be given through a syringe.

Raw meat broth: One tablespoon of RAW ground meat, add to one-half cup of purified water, mash the meat in the water with a fork or put it through a blender or food processor and serve.

Colostrum is the first food that comes from the mammary glands after birth. It is full of immunoglobulins, the immune builders, as well as providing nutrients for your animal. You can buy it in powder form from a health food store or online. My suggestion with regard to dosage is to give 1/2 teaspoon at a time to cats and small dogs, 1 teaspoon for medium dogs, and 2 teaspoons for large dogs.  This must be put into purified water; do not give the powder directly into your animal's mouth.  S/he will choke on it.

My preferences are raw egg yolk broth a raw meat broth.  Both of these broths are easy for your animal to digest during illness,  dehydration, or if you are concerned because they are not eating.

Colostrum broth would be my third choice and only if your animal won't take either the raw egg yolk or raw meat broth.

Do not give vegetable broth during this time. Carnivores need the protein from the egg or meat broth. Do not mix proteins either. In other words, do not mix the egg broth with the meat broth. Proteins must be given separately.

If your animal is too ill to eat on his/her own, give either of the above broth liquids with a syringe or a spoon.

CATS:  When syringing a liquid into a cat’s mouth, be sure you syringe from one side of the mouth or the other.  Do not syringe straight into the cat’s mouth from the front of his/her mouth.  Cats will choke on liquid very easily if the liquid is just running down their throat.  The cat’s tongue must do the swallowing; you must see your cat’s tongue moving.

Any of the broths or juices must be given within 15-20 minutes after preparing them because once you have exposed the nutrients, they will dissipate quickly.

If you prepare more than your animal will take, then give it to a healthy animal in your family or throw it out. Prepare a fresh mixture each time you give it.

The broths and/or the Colostrum will sustain your animal until you can get more information on what to do next.  Email me pat@patmckay.com Or take your animal to an emergency facility, whatever is needed at the time.
